Episode 3: What Does Peace Mean?

In our previous episode, we looked at "Peace Terms," looking at the various kind of peace that exist. We highlighted the temporary and contextual serenity that the world provides and contrasted it with the profound, eternal peace that God provides. This peace endures even in the face of adversity, and it is this that we hope to understand and feel via this course.

So, how do we gain access to this deep sense of peace? The solution is to walk in agreement with Jesus. To do so, we must reach an agreement with God on two critical issues:

  1. Recognizing Our Sinful Condition: We admit that we are sinners who are unable to save ourselves. Our sins keep us from being in peace with God. We are headed for eternal separation—spiritual death—if God does not intervene.
  2. Accepting God's Solution: God sent His Son, Jesus, to save us. Jesus carried our sins, died on the cross, and rose from the dead to offer us forgiveness and reconciliation. We can gain eternal life and enduring peace through Jesus by agreeing with God's answer.

We can invite Jesus into our life once we've connected with God's position on these issues. We become God's children as a result of this transformational step, and His peace becomes a reality within us.

Growing in God's Peace: God's peace is alive and active, like a fruit-bearing tree. It grows into a powerful force that empowers us. We gain mastery over chaos as we progress in peace, bringing calm to stormy situations and directing others into our peace.

But what exactly does this peace entail? It is more than just mental peace; it is a profound idea rooted in the Hebrew word "Shalom." This word expresses significantly more than the English word "peace." It denotes:

  1. Heart and mind tranquillity: Shalom offers inner peace. We find reconciliation with God, forgiveness of sins, and release from fear, guilt and shame through Jesus. We can approach God with confidence.
  2. Shalom extends to health and wholeness. We have access to divine healing and well-being via Jesus, removing ailments and experiencing total health.
  3. Shalom includes prosperity—our needs being met and blessings abundant. God's plan includes financial stability, which allows us to be generous and satisfy the needs of others.
  4. Shalom guarantees safety and security from injury and danger. Shalom-marked communities are safe, crime-free, and serene havens for all.

In Numbers 6:24-26, God instructs Aaron to bless the children of Israel with Shalom:

"The Lord bless you and keep you;

The Lord make His face shine upon you,

And be gracious to you;

The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,

And give you peace."

This blessing illustrates Shalom's holistic character. Interestingly, quoting both Jesus and Paul—Hebrews writing in Greek—used "eirene," the Greek equivalent of Shalom, to denote the same all-encompassing peace.

Finally, Shalom represents more than just peace; it also represents tranquillity, health, wealth, and security. God intends to bring Shalom into all aspect of our existence, from inner calm to physical well-being, financial wealth, and communal safety. This expansive peace awaits us, not merely as a quiet thought, but as a complete reality.

Stay tuned for our next episode, in which we'll look at how God's peace works in our lives.
